The Houlton Tapestries

Project Overview

This introductory film was conceived, filmed, and produced in-house by Allan Levy. It sets out the project context, creative intent, and working approach, outlining how the work responds to site, people, and purpose, and how research, making, and collaboration informed the final outcome.

Research and Development

This image shows early research undertaken at the BT Archives, grounding the project in historical context and technical understanding. This research phase informed both the conceptual direction and material decisions, ensuring the final work was accurate, relevant, and site-responsive rather than purely illustrative.

Installation in Practice

This film documents the installation of the Houlton Tapestry at Houlton School, showing how the work was delivered, sited, and integrated in collaboration with the school to ensure a robust, long-term outcome.

Completed Work and Collaboration

This film presents the completed Houlton Tapestry, accompanied by an original musical composition created by the Houlton School music department. The project was developed collaboratively with the art, drama, and music departments, with students contributing to multiple elements. The film acts as a final showcase, bringing together process, participation, and outcome.

The St Gabriel’s Tapestry

This film presents the St Gabriel’s Tapestry, a site-specific iteration of the work developed for display within the school. The tapestry reflects the identity of the setting while retaining the core structure of the wider project, demonstrating how the approach can adapt meaningfully across different sites and communities.

Public Presentation

This film documents a walkthrough of the exhibition at Rugby Art Gallery, showing the work in a public-facing context. The exhibition extended the project beyond the school, allowing wider audiences to encounter the tapestry and its collaborative narrative within a formal gallery setting.
